The Facebook application known as “Fan Check” is not a virus, despite what all of your friends are thinking. There is no such thing as a Facebook virus.
The error you see when you go to their application page says the following:
The application “Fan Check” is temporarily unavailable due to an issue with its third-party developer. We are investigating the situation and apologize for any inconvenience.
This doesn’t mean that Fan Check is doing something wrong, it could mean that any technical problem is happening between the connection with Facebook and Fan Check.
Here is what I believe the issue is; Fan Check never knew that they would become an overnight success. Originally, the application was getting maybe 100 requests per day. Then, overnight, they began getting 1,000,000 requests per day. This application downloads a number of photos from your friends profiles, and combines them into one larger picture. Image manipulation is a CPU intensive process (one which would take on average 30 seconds). Near the end of the life of the application, they began making text lists instead of an image, most likely an attempt to cut down CPU costs, but by then it was already too late.
